Metal Men #20 (of 56)
Birthday Cake For a Cannibal Robot
July 1st, 1966
The Metal Men are watching television's latest sensation, "Batman". After defeating yet another giant robot, Doctor William Magnus has Tin collect all of it's pieces, for later study in Magnus' laboratory. After Magnus, once again, spurns the advances of Platinum, Iron hefts Tin into the Jetaway, and the team returns to headquarters. Unbeknownst to Magnus, and the Metal Men, they are being observed by Doctor Yes, the evil twin brother of Wonder Woman's arch-nemesis, Egg Fu. Magnus sequesters himself, alone, in his laboratory, and begins to reconstruct the dismantled robot, little suspecting that Doctor Yes still has control over it. The disembodied head of the robot opens it's mouth, and swallows Magnus. When one of Magnus' model girlfriends arrives for their dinner date, she is violently chased away by the jealous Platinum. Angrily, Platinum enters Magnus' laboratory, only to find no sign of her creator. The Metal Men continue the work of reconstructing Doctor Yes' robot, as a favor to Magnus.
The robot's limbs begin attacking the Metal Men, until Gold is able to install a new responsometer into the robot's command centers. Doctor Yes, though, has actually installed the robot's real command center in it's ankle, not it's head, and thus still maintains control over it. Doctor Yes allows the robot to follow the Metal Men's commands, to keep up the pretense that they command it's actions. The Metal Men have the robot carry it to one of the many night clubs that Magnus frequents, in search of their creator. Something of a sensation, the Metal Men take a few moments out to entertain the club kids, with some dance styles based on their elemental make-up. Intent on impressing Magnus, the Metal Men order the robot to take them to it's leader. The robot carries the Metal Men over the Great Wall, into China. Spying a giant birthday cake, the Metal Men, inexplicably, decide to disguise themselves as candles on the cake. When the robot goes to eat the cake, Magnus falls out of it's mouth.
Mercury leaps into the fray, quickly being smashed into globules. Tin tries to shield the Metal Men from attack, but proves too fragile against the robot's pounding fist. Suddenly, Doctor Yes appears, and entangles Magnus, and the Metal Men, in his prehensile mustache. Doctor Yes channels electricity through his mustache, stunning Magnus, and the Metal Men. Doctor Yes then brainwashes them all into hating America. Doctor Yes' robot carries Magnus, and the Metal Men to an "I Am An American" rally, organized by school children. The Metal Men feel compelled to spout anti-American hate speech. To prevent themselves from speaking so perversely in front of the children, the Metal Men self-destruct. Doctor Yes turns his robot loose on the children. In a final act of defiance, the individual pieces of the Metal Men bombard the robot, destroying it. Magnus stumbles from the robot's junked interior. A line of children approach Magnus, each child carrying a piece of one of the Metal Men. They plead with the inventor to rebuild their heroes. Over the next several days, Magnus does just that.
